Introduction to Backcountry Skiing in the White Mountains
Are you new to exploring beyond the resort and eager to develop the skills to venture into different terrains? Welcome to our comprehensive course designed for skiers and snowboarders looking to embrace the thrill of backcountry skiing in the White Mountains.
Course Highlights:
Orientation and Gear Check: Your day begins with an orientation and gear check. Learn the ins and outs of backcountry skiing and snowboarding equipment, including the secure application of skins.
Weather and Safety Briefing: Prior to heading out, we'll review the latest Mount Washington Avalanche Center avalanche advisory and Mount Washington Observatory forecast. Safety is our top priority.
Skill Development: Throughout the day, our experienced guides will cover essential topics, including:
Safe route finding
Identifying avalanche terrain and other objective hazards
Understanding snow stability
Skinning and downhill technique
Maintaining comfort in the winter mountains
Location
Our course location will be determined based on weather, snow, and avalanche conditions, as well as the group's ability level and guide judgment.
Possibilities include iconic trails like the Sherburne Trail or the Gulf of Slides Trail on Mt. Washington, as well as various backcountry ski trails and glades in the Mount Washington Valley, such as the Black Mountain Ski Trail, Doublehead Ski Trail, and Maple Villa Glade.
